Plant a Cooler and Greener Future in Kwinana, WA

Cooler and greener cities start with us! Join us as we plant an Urban Shade Forest across a series of Parks and Reserves in Kwinana to be enjoyed for generations to come.

As green spaces continue to disappear from our cities and suburbs, we face the emergence of Urban Heat Islands – where areas with high levels of concrete and other built surfaces absorb and trap heat, driving up temperatures within our cities. Extreme heat poses a significant threat to human health, while also impacting the plant and animal species that call our cities home. Fortunately, we can help our cities to adapt to the heat – by planting trees and shrubs that give cooling shade.

In 2026, we’ll be growing a cooler and greener Kwinana by planting 2,600 native seedlings across three sites in a series of exciting community planting events!

Ready to create a more resilient Kwinana? Through this project, you’ll be able to:

  • Get your hands dirty by planting native species at three amazing sites – Lizards Reserve and Lake Magenup in Wandi, Crossroads Reserve in Wellard;
  • Plant some roots – literally – within Kwinana, and create Urban Forests that will benefit the community for years to come!
  • Enjoy a range of educational activities and workshops, guided by First Nations people and other environmental experts (select events only);
  • Contribute to the movement to create cities and towns that are cooler, more biodiverse, and resilient to our changing climate;

Are you a private landholder in the City of Kwinana and interested in planting your very own Urban Shade Forest? Whether it’s at home, school, or maybe even at your workplace, we may be able to support you. Get in touch with us at [email protected], to connect with our team.

In May 2026, we will also support the City of Kwinana’s Native Seedling Subsidy Scheme by providing an additional 2,000 seedlings to the program. City of Kwinana residents can purchase up to 20 native plants per household at a 50% discount during the subsidy period! To learn more, please contact customer@kwinana.wa.gov.au.

PLEASE NOTE: Planting events are held during the cooler, wetter months to give our seedlings the best chance to thrive. For this project, events will only run from May to September 2026 and again in 2027. Looking for more volunteering opportunities across WA? Click here to explore what’s available!
