Celebrate World Wetlands Day 2026: Join CVA Events Across Australia

Reading about wetlands is one thing. Getting your boots muddy whilst actually protecting them? That’s where the magic happens.

This World Wetlands Day 2026, Conservation Volunteers Australia is hosting special events across the country – from intimate saltmarsh walks to island cleanups, from nocturnal adventures to urban wetland restoration. Each event is designed to connect you directly with these remarkable ecosystems whilst making a tangible difference.

Here’s your chance to move from awareness to action.

Why attend a wetlands event?

Before we dive into the specific events, let’s talk about why showing up matters.

You’ll see wetlands up close. There’s something transformative about standing in a wetland, watching water birds feed, seeing the intricate root systems of mangroves, or observing how water filters through vegetation. These experiences create lasting connections that reading never can.

You’ll make an immediate impact. Every piece of rubbish removed, every weed pulled, every native plant established directly improves wetland health. You’ll leave knowing you’ve contributed something real.

You’ll learn from experts. Our Project Officers across Australia are passionate conservation champions with deep local knowledge. They’ll share insights about the specific ecosystems you’re working in, the wildlife that depends on them, and the challenges they face.

You’ll meet like-minded people. There’s something special about conservation volunteering communities. You’ll connect with people who care about the same things you do, and you might just make friendships that extend beyond the event.

You’ll understand the bigger picture. Hands-on experience helps you see how wetlands fit into broader ecosystems, why they matter for climate and biodiversity, and what threats they’re facing.

Beyond the events: keep the momentum going

These World Wetlands Day events are fantastic starting points, but your wetland protection journey doesn’t have to end there.

Download our 7 Days to Protect Australian Wetlands Challenge for practical actions you can take at home – from responsible car washing to picking up rubbish, from choosing eco-friendly products to proper waste disposal. Each day addresses a different pathway through which pollution reaches wetlands.

Share your experience on social media with #CVAWetlandChallenge and #WorldWetlandsDay. Your photos and stories inspire others to get involved, multiplying the impact.
